Sonia Quinn advo Payroll Manager; Interview

We have put advo’s Payroll Manager in this spotlight this month. In our interview with Sonia Quinn, we focus on client trends and challenges within the last financial year and what key topics she envisages to be on the agenda for the next financial year.

Looking back, what’s the biggest trend you noticed in the 2022 to 2023 financial year?

There has been a big increase in our clients speaking to us about their plans to implement benefits and seeking advice surrounding how to submit this to the HMRC. For those implementing new benefits, monthly processing seems to be the preferred choice rather than submitting a P11D at the end of the financial year.

What challenges have you noticed clients facing in the 2022 to 2023 financial year?

Ensuring data compliance and integrity has been high up the list for many of our clients. The moves we have made to increase automation and efficiency within our own payroll software has helped with this challenge. We have also focused on taking the time to discuss and explain HMRC rulings with our clients. There are so many rules its understandably hard for businesses to keep on top of their duties and responsibilities so being able to help our clients with this via our Payroll advice has been very important.

What’s do you consider to be the biggest challenge for the next financial year?

Carrying on from the prior question, I believe the biggest challenge going forward and where clients may experience the most exposure is lack of knowledge in terms of when to reach out to advo. As a payroll advisory we are here to not only support clients with the processing of the payroll, but also the advice that sits behind that in terms of ensuring employers are paying employees compliantly and in line with HMRC rulings. Taking a proactive approach to ensuring compliance with HMRC rulings is the most effective way to limit the risk of exposure and we are here and ready to help.

And finally, what do you enjoy most about your role?

In payroll, no two days are the same so the variation of work really appeals to me. I love interreacting with clients and taking the time to understand their business, explain their requirements in a way they understand and help implement processes to ensure their payroll is running efficiently and compliantly. The interaction with clients and subsequent feedback also helps in making enhancements to our software and internal processes which is beneficial for us all.
