World Mental Health Day:10 October 2020

At least one in six workers experience mental health problems with far-ranging symptoms and conditions which impact each person differently. The complex social phenomenon of lockdown and the uncertainty about people’s livelihoods, increased stress and pressure, and feelings of being socially isolated have, in recent months, exacerbated mental health issues. This would be a good time to promote a positive workplace wellbeing message.

The levels of uncertainty, stress, depression and anxiety have been heightened during the last six months and there is, therefore, a growing need to support mental health in the workplace.

World Mental Health Day on 10 October 2020 aims to increase global education, awareness and communication about this issue and the promotion of World Mental Health Day could be the perfect opportunity for you to endorse positive mental health within your workplace.

As an employer, you should be mindful that any long-term mental health issues may be regarded as a disability under the Equality Act 2010. There are steps to follow in line with this legislation to ensure employees who are classed as disabled under the Equality Act 2010 are protected against any unfavourable treatment.  Please do contact us if you require any support and advice in this area.

Supportive business practices such as those shown below, can reduce the length of employee absences, improve morale and promote positive workplace wellbeing and therefore mitigate any mental health issues:

  • Encourage employees to raise mental health concerns, or any workplace concerns that may be exacerbating mental health conditions;
  • Be prepared to respond to an employee who does not wish to talk. Remind the employee that they can raise any concerns, at any time, and they will be supported by the company;
  • Explore reasonable adjustments that can be made in the workplace or to the working day in order to assist the employee in their daily role;
  • Encourage the employee to make use of the Company’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), where available and / or signpost them to any other support organisations.
