What is Mental Health Awareness Week and why does it matter?
Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual event, giving the whole of the UK an opportunity to focus on achieving good mental health, and is all about starting conversations about mental health.
What actually happens during the week?
The week is an opportunity for people to talk about all aspects of mental health, with a focus on providing help and advice.
This year the week has a nature theme – focusing on noticing nature and trying to make a habit of being in nature every day. Stop to listen to birdsong, smell freshly cut grass, and notice any trees, flowers or take notice of animals nearby.
Why is nature the theme?
The evidence is clear than access to nature can have hugely positive impacts on our mental health, which millions of people discovered in the COVID-19 lockdowns. Being in nature is known to an effective way of tackling mental health problems and protecting our wellbeing.
What can I as an employer do to help?
According to Mind, 56% of employers feel they would like to do more to improve staff mental wellbeing, but don’t feel they have the right training.
